A gremlin has moved my scale...I will weigh these up as soon as I find one of the others.

As you can see under the skirting table, I don't need to take a lot off the fleeces when I re-skirt. Jerry takes the worst of it off when he is shearing. I just make sure that the 'other stuff' is removed. Any seconds cuts fall through the table. And some fleeces need to be flipped to shake off other debris.

Behind the skirting table is the horse trailer with fleeces for sale, and the fleeces I have left to do.

Got to get this finished! We start shearing our pregnant ewes early January, and continue shearing our until early March. That is 30 more fleeces...

Because of all of the rain the year before, the sheep were not sheared.

They have a run in barn, but they prefer to be outside.

The center has green tips. I would comb the center of the fleeces, and card the sides.

Or...send the whole thing out to become top.

Otherwise, the tips may make the fleece neppy.

Merino washed

The 'browns' merino.

The white Merino I used here is technically the skirts. It is good wool, but not the better 'stuff'. (o;
It is $3/lb. plus shipping. I will just grab whatever poundage you want out of whatever color you want. It has all been skirted. It just has an extra years growth and muddy tips. I would soak this in cold water before using your soap and HOT water.
I will do a sample spin of this later in the week and post progress pictures.

Psycho always has to help wherever there is wool. Her favorite is raw. Especially the skirts. Eww!

These last 2 pictures are of the 2 Merinos washed next to the 'Mystery' fleece, which has now been identified as a Dorset/Dorset cross.

The fleece is no longer a mystery. It is a Dorset or a Dorset cross. The pictures on the left are the raw fleece. (Blogger won't let me move them up, sorry!) The pictures on the right show the washed fleece. I washed it in Dawn dish detergent and HOT water 2x and a hot rinse. The majority of the shavings shook out and more came out in the wash. Spinning took care of the rest. Because this is another big fleece, I will split it down the middle if you can only use/afford half.

Here I combed the ends and then spun it.
This was nicer to spin.

Here is the wool just picked apart by hand and spun.

2 years growth. Too many rainy days last year, not enough time for the sheep to dry out. Muddy/dirty tips. Seem to be sound. From healthy ewes and wethers. It has a very nice tight crimp.
What is in the basket is what I want to wash myself to see how clean it will become. Those pictures will come in the next few days, I hope.

This is all from the skirted parts of the fleece, so it is dirtier than what I will be selling.

This is also shorter than the rest. Most of it is the long stuff that will be sold.

Spun fine with an extra twist.

Can actually do the long draw with this wool!

I enjoyed spinning this roving and was totally impressed that I was able to long draw it when I was trying to spin thicker. The only way I could get it thicker would be to 3 ply it. That doesn't mean that someone else can't spin it thicker. I just prefer to spin a fine thread/yarn. We have ~3# of this roving available at $2.50/oz.

Horned Dorset. 2-4 1/2" plus staple. 2 1/4#. $27 plus shipping. Her fleece is longer this year, and a 'hair' lighter.
I believe less snow equals less lanolin. Therefore, less weight. But, don't quote me on that!! It is just something we've noticed here on our farm.

As you can see, the tips are slightly 'squashed'. This is from wearing the coat. 90% of that will be fine, and will open up in the wash. Some may actually break off in the picking process. One of my processors does not put the Dorsets through her picker because she says it shreds the fleece as it is so fine. She just washes the fleece, and opens it up by hand at the carding machine. I believe the other processor uses the picker. But, then they have HUGE equipment. So, I don't know the difference.

Contact your own processor before you commit to a fine fleece. Ours are just below a Merino and just above a Corriedale on the fine scale, and the grease scale. (-;

Size 10-13 (although we have a gentleman with a size 14 foot that said that they fit nicely)

A combination of black, silver/gray and brown wool blended into an interesting brown 'tweed' sock, mill spun and knit by Zeilinger Wool Company, with (30%)nylon added for strength.

It is recommended that they be hand washed and lay flat to dry, but my husband has thrown mine in the washer without any ill effects.

We have 20 pair available. The more you buy, the cheaper they are. $20/pair, $35/2 pair, $50/3 pair.

Each fleece comes with its own card in a snack bag. Inside the bag are pieces of fleece pulled from 4-6 different areas on the fleeces. That way I can tell you what the staple lengths are. And you now have a record of the fleece you bought. My card will be in the bag or with your invoice. You can put all this together in a safe place, so if you think you may want the same fleece another year, you will know where you purchased it.

When John (or any other sheep) arrives home with you, please open the box and then open the bag and let the fleece breathe. The air has been squeezed out of the bag for shipping, and needs to be opened ASAP.

All fleeces are coated year round. Any dusty dirt and VM is generally from the shearing floor. I have removed all VM and 2nd cuts that I see when skirting and rolling fleeces. All fleeces are rolled sides in and then rolled from butt to tip. Just as if they were going to the show tent.

Keira's lamb fleece. Somehow the processor 'shredded' this fleece. There are little pills throughout the fleece. Jerry says it spins fine, just the pills are distracting. I haven't spun this yet, but I imagine that they could be picked out. Or, left in for texture. $1.50/oz. plus shipping.

2009 Shearing

We have started to shear!! Some of our ewes are heavily pregnant and needed to have their fleeces off. To those of you who have followed our blog, you know that we are almost a month late in shearing. That is because we never had a January thaw. )o:
These are just some teaser pictures. As of February 12, we have 24 shorn and 11 to go. Lambing started Friday the 13th of February, so shearing is on hold. We will start again today, the 15th. Skirting, photographing, bagging and tagging will start Thursday the 19th, when my friend Anne shows up to help. Think we can get 35 done in a day?

Baby-Shetland/Corriedale. Odd combo. She came to us as payment for breeding. This fleece is not for sale. It was so coarse that it has been washed and is going out to be made into quilt batts.

Shaun (aka Butterfly) and Snow. These two fleeces have been set aside for ourselves. We are not planning on keeping any replacement lambs for awhile (other than Spot), and therefore will have no lamb fleeces (coated) to sell for a while. I have 5 uncoated lamb's fleeces in the basement awaiting skirting, photographing, bagging and tagging though. I will have to get to those soon...

'Help!'

Washing fleeces

I am still washing fleeces............but now I am starting to wash some of the ones that are staying here on the farm to be processed. Yeah!!

Romney and Romney cross. The cross has an incredible staple length. I think I will be combing that one. The gray Romney is 3 of 7 fleeces. I still have to reskirt and wash the other 4. Those will become roving.

The white is Cornelius' baby fleece. He is our Horned Dorset ram that we purchased last year. At first I was disappointed with his fleece because of the grass and dirt, but then it dawned on me that he was almost 3 months old before he came to live with us. So he had three months to get VM and extra muck in his fleece. 2 washes and 1 rinse took care of the majority of it. I will separate the dirtier stuff and deal with that later.

The brown is from one of Jerry's shearing customers. It was a Merino cross. Maybe Dorset &/or Rambouilet. It is a little short (under 2") and will be combed. I am afraid it will end up neppy in the carder.

And then the other screen is the Romney and Romney cross.

We have had frost here for the past few days and it only gets to about 5o during the day, but that is alright. It is not snowing, yet... And so what if it takes a little longer to dry the fleeces. These are mine to play with this winter. (o;

Fleeces for sale will be back here in January when Jerry starts shearing the pregnant ewes. Stayed tuned!

The following comment was left on our blog and I decided to show you in pictures how there is less lanolin in our fleeces.

Windyridge has left a new comment on your post "Corriedale ewe": Your fleeces are lovely! As a spinner and sheep farmer and seller of covered fleeces myself, I am curious how coating the sheep causes less lanolin in the fleece.

The white coat is a clean coat. (Brand new they are whiter than that!) As the fleeces grow, or the coats become dirty, we change them and then I wash them. (The website says not to wash them, but I've got to!!) Some of what is on the coat is manure, but the majority of it is lanolin and sheep sweat. And the coats are a lot heavier when they are dirty than when they are clean.

My Corriedale wether gets a new coat about every other month. And his coat looks just like these when we change it.

Because I am so happy with the looks of our fleeces with these coats, we will be becoming dealers for the Matilda coats very soon!!
