Continuing to de-stash fleeces

All of these fleeces are ones that I held back from selling as I thought I'd have to time to wash them myself and get them to the mill to be processed/or process myself. They all have some VM in them. I am taken as many pictures as I can to show any of the debris that might be found in the fleece. Quite a few also have muddy tips. A cold water soak will remove most, if not all, of the mud.

 Yes, it does have quite a bit of VM, but as you can from

the picture below with the yarn, and further below with 

the roving, the majority of it comes out in the processing.

 Yarn is 3 different shades of brown, 

and roving in a blend of all the browns.

I've taken a handful of her fleece and done a couple

of cold water soaks to get rid of the mud, and one hot

water soak with Dawn to remove most of the lanolin

and hopefully the tiny pieces of hay seed. If it is to my

satisfaction, I will then offer her fleece for sale.

Her fleece has such a tight crimp that it is like Velcro.

 The grays are quite a bit shorter than the white

(different farms and different feeds),. But I am combing

the gray fleece with my Louet single row combs, and 

it is coming out beautifully. It has a great spring to it.

I am fairly sure this is Harriet. Which would make

her a Dorset/Romney. Her father's fleece looks a LOT

like this, but he is a black chocolate while she is more 

of a milk chocolate.

 Can you see where the alpaca ends and the wool

Icelandic

Compared to the other fleeces listed here,

this one is on the coarse side. But, it would still

make a great shawl, or 3,  or great outerwear.

And, Icelandic felts beautifully.

This fleece is long on the sides, like an Icelandic

and short across the back with tight curls. 

I will post more fleeces later in the week. 

I am trying to take advantage of our nice weather

to get some of my other stashed fleeces washed.

I have a number that are going to the mill in the next 

few weeks to be processed into roving. Silver to black

adult mohair, white kid mohair, black and white kid

mohair as well as different wool that will be blended

with matching alpaca. I have a few bags of black alpaca

that need to be washed next to be sent out and made into roving.

Half of all these fleece sales go to grain and hay for the sheep.

The other half goes to the mill for processing. When the roving

or yarn is sold, it goes right back into the farm. This is the main

way our farm pays for itself. Lamb sales pay for property taxes.

Some day, hopefully, hay sales will pay for the hay equipment.

It is tough to be a farmer, but if we did not love it, 

we would not do it!! Lambs help make up for any heartache!
